Project Overview

Dave’s Marketplace, one of Rhode Island’s most beloved grocery chains, faced growing pains as they expanded into the eCommerce space. With multiple retail locations and a thriving catering and prepared foods business, they needed far more than a traditional online store. Standard platforms couldn’t handle the complexity of their operations—including real-time order timing, multi-department routing, label printing logistics, and live order confirmation systems.

Initially brought in by another top-tier marketing and development team, Atlas Studios was quickly identified as the better-suited partner to handle the scale and specificity of Dave’s challenges. Our team worked closely with internal stakeholders, even going as far as physically measuring existing label printers and shadowing order workflows to understand every nuance of the fulfillment process.

From the ground up, Atlas developed a robust, custom-built platform tailored to Dave’s hybrid business model. The system seamlessly managed everything from eCommerce grocery orders to catering workflows, with real-time order tracking, scheduled pickups, automated label printing, and full backend coordination. What began as a digital upgrade quickly evolved into a critical operational system—making Dave’s Marketplace more agile, responsive, and scalable than ever before.

Objectives

To design and deploy a customized eCommerce and order fulfillment system for Dave’s Marketplace that accommodates the unique complexities of a grocery, catering, and prepared food business operating at scale across multiple locations.

  • Hybrid Commerce Infrastructure: Build a platform that supports not just retail grocery orders, but also catering, lunch prep, and time-sensitive pickups.
  • Operational Automation: Integrate real-time label printing, order timing, and staff confirmation processes to streamline fulfillment and reduce human error.
  • Cross-Location Coordination: Ensure the system accounts for inventory, kitchen workflows, and logistical timing across multiple locations simultaneously.
  • In-Depth Stakeholder Integration: Embed closely with Dave’s team to capture the nuances of operations and deliver tools tailored to real-world execution.

Key Features

  • Custom Commerce & Fulfillment Platform: Developed from scratch to handle dynamic order types, location-based processing, and precise timing coordination.
  • Automated Label Printing System: Integrated directly with Dave’s in-store infrastructure, with printer mapping and real-time data output for accurate packaging.
  • Catering & Pickup Scheduling Tools: Empowered customers and staff to coordinate complex orders with time-slot precision and automated status updates.
  • Hands-On Collaboration: Atlas worked closely with internal teams, physically mapping environments and workflows to deliver a system built from operational reality—not assumption.

Conclusion

Atlas Studios’ work with Dave’s Marketplace demonstrates what’s possible when digital development meets deep operational immersion. By going beyond traditional eCommerce and designing a system tailored to the realities of multi-faceted food service, Atlas delivered a tool that transformed Dave’s ability to serve, scale, and satisfy across all departments. This project proves that when complexity is embraced rather than avoided, true innovation can thrive.
